Interesting William H. Macy - A Brilliant Actor Who Can't Tell a Lie

From Moviefone.com

William H. Macy is best known for his Academy Award-nominated role as a dishonest businessman in 'Fargo,' and is currently starring in 'Shameless,' as an alcoholic father of six with a twisted set of priorities. He's spectacular at depicting hauntingly corrupt characters, which is why we were so blown away by his response when we asked him to share the most defining moment of his career. The accomplished actor admits to a big mistake in his past, one that would change his own character in a big way.

Around 20 years ago, Macy told an unnecessary lie to someone that could have potentially helped him with a project. In somewhat of a somber tone, the actor says, "I sort of lied about the status of the film to a person that was thinking of producing it. And it was a foolish lie, I gained nothing from it. I don't know why I did it."

He continues,"I got caught ... and the film fell apart as a result of it. I got so upset -- and I had no one to blame but myself -- that I made a pledge that I would never lie again. And I know that's almost impossible to do, but since that day, and this is 20-some-odd years ago, I've really sort of stuck to that. I don't lie ... anymore."

So, perhaps it's his inability to tell a lie off camera that fuels his brilliant skill at portraying such disloyal men on screen. If so, here's to William H. Macy, may his pledge to never tell a lie hold strong, and his career flourish as a result.

------------------------------------

Anyone else think the biggest lie is that he hasn't lied in 20 years?

That is a really interesting story. Its no surprise that he ends up in David Mamet films . . . Mamet's characters are always lying to each other

And of course, the immediate question you ask when someone says "I told a terrible lie 20 years ago" is "and what about what you're telling me now"?

As to the story, well Hollywood is filled with that kind of BS, "Oh, Jennifer Aniston is 'attached' to the project". Everyone knows that 'attached' doesn't mean "signed".

On my much more ordinary level, I'm used to "Oh, we've got the contracts and that will be OK"

To which the right answer is "then you'll have no problem returning a signed copy to me before we begin work".

Yes, "We'll get started when the check clears".

Managing payments to performance is ground truth . . . I've never done general contracting, but those guys are good, managing payments on all sorts of trades.

I wouldn't announce something like that or everyone's going to try to catch you on one.

"So you never lie?" "Nope."
"Yet you did 20 years ago, though didn't you?" "Well, yeah... I... damnit!"
